Plein Air Painting Along the Big Wood River in Idaho
Recently, I spent a beautiful, summer day of plein air painting along the world famous Big Wood River in Sun Valley, Idaho.
Scroll down below for a quick little Instagram video of my plein air painting set-up. Plein air painting is a term for painting outside in the fresh air. When painting outside, the artist must work quickly because the light and weather changes quickly. I like to keep my supplies down to a minimum. It's important for me to use a lightweight, yet stable pochade box which is a portable easel.
I have quite a few different pochade box easels. But for this day, I chose my handy and hardy Strada Easel. This easel is a favorite and was the perfect choice for quickly setting up and painting along the Big Wood River. You can read my review here > On The Go With Strada Easel
To make my outdoor painting life even more simple, I always paint with Cobra solvent-free oils, water mixable paints! On this day, I even used the water directly from the Big Wood River! I like to infuse my plein air paintings with the local water.
People often ask me what supplies I use. So here's the answer! This little painting was painted on Fredrix linen with the Aspen brushes I helped develop with Princeton Brush Company!
I hope you enjoy seeing my beautiful Idaho plein air painting day...

Join internationally acclaimed artist, Lori McNee for a special 3-day plein air landscape painting workshop. Using her art studio as home-base, paint on location with Lori in beautiful Sun Valley, Idaho, and discover why Ernest Hemingway loved it here…
On a warm autumn day in 1939, Ernest Hemingway stood in the Sun Valley Cemetery and methodically read aloud a eulogy for his friend, a publicist for the Sun Valley Resort. Many believed this to be one of Hemingway’s finest works of prose.
“He loved the warm sun of summer and the high mountain meadows, the trails through the timber and the sudden clear blue of the lakes. He loved the hills in the winter when the snow comes,” Hemingway said. “Best of all he loved the fall … the fall with the tawny and grey, the leaves yellow on the cottonwoods, leaves floating on the trout streams and above the hills the high blue windless skies. He loved to shoot, he loved to ride and he loved to fish.”
Much like the alps, Sun Valley, Idaho is nestled below its famous ski mountain, Bald Mountain. In October, the days are warm, nights are cool, it's our favorite time of year. To read more about autumn in Sun Valley, please read Sunset Magazine's article, "Sun Valley's Golden Season".

When Art and Gardening Meet
Art and gardening are two of my favorite things...add in photography, and I have the perfect day!
Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to visit, and paint an amazing garden at my friend's private estate during the Kneeland Gallery Plein Air Event. I thought you might enjoy seeing my photos of this exceptional high altitude gardening.
Jane, the estate owner/gardener also happens to be a talented artisan. A weaver by trade, Jane has woven a beautiful tapestry of color with perennial flowers, interesting trees, and garden sculptures with a bit of whimsy.
Before I began to paint, I wandered the extensive gardens in search of the perfect place to create on a hot August day. The grounds were filled with meandering streams that led to lily ponds amidst colorful flower beds.
High altitude or 'alpine' gardening can be challenging, but rewarding. The growing season is short, but the colors are extra brilliant in the bright sun where the air is clear and clean.
Jane's large vegetable garden is fit for a queen, complete with an old wrought iron fence to keep out the local deer, elk and moose.
The entrance to the enormous greenhouse is flanked by hydrangeas and weeping birch trees. Jane and her husband enjoy entertaining guests to candlelit dinners inside their greenhouse during the snowy winter months.
With her unique flare for detail, Jane lines the base of her outdoor table with wreaths of begonias!
While dining outside, guests can relax to the tranquil sounds of the many garden fountains...
A Deborah Butterfield horse sculpture shares the grand entrance to estate with a golf cart and mini tractor.
After touring the art and gardening, I finally settled upon a nice shady spot near the edge of an ornamental lily pond.
Somewhat overwhelmed by all the beautiful choices, I decided to paint an intimate scene of a water lily.
For me, this day will be a wonderful memory of summer that will help keep me warm during the l o n g , cold, Idaho winter! I hope you enjoyed the garden tour.
