Judging Midway Art Association’s Plein Air Paradise 🏔️🎨
Exciting News: I’m Judging Midway Art Association’s Plein Air Paradise! 🎨🏔️
I’ve been invited to serve as a judge for this year’s Wasatch Plein Air Paradise (WPAP), one of the largest and most celebrated plein air events in the country! The festival runs from June 21 to July 5 in the stunning Heber Valley, Utah—an area known for its breathtaking mountain vistas, serene lakes, and charming historic farms. It’s truly a painter’s paradise.
This year; I’ll be judging alongside talented Idaho/Utah artist, Kwani Winder. Our task won’t be easy, as WPAP always attracts an impressive mix of professional and emerging artists, each bringing their unique vision to life on canvas.
Award night is set for July 1, and I’m looking forward to not only selecting the winners but also sharing a few thoughts about what stood out in the work we’ll be honoring. It’s inspiring to see how each artist interprets the landscape in their own style.
If you’re in the area, come and experience the festival! From the Quick Draw competition to live demos and exhibitions- there’s something for everyone. It’s a celebration of creativity set against one of the most beautiful backdrops imaginable.
👉 For more details, visit Midway Art Association’s website.
Hope to see you there!
I’m Judging the Northwest Lavender Paint Out! 💜🎨
I’m Judging the Northwest Lavender Paint Out! 💜🎨
This summer, I’ll be judging this year’s Northwest Lavender Paint Out, presented by the Willamette Valley Lavender Festival & Plein Air Art Show, running from June 9 to July 11. This event celebrates the beauty of the Pacific Northwest’s iconic lavender fields, where artists capture vibrant purple blooms set against stunning backdrops of rolling hills, rustic farms, and even snow-capped mountains.
On July 11, I’ll be at the Chehalem Cultural Center in Newberg, Oregon, to evaluate the incredible artwork created during the festival. With an estimated 200 to 400 paintings on display, my task will be to select 1st, 2nd, 3rd place, and six honorable mentions in both the professional and open categories—18 awards total! It’s always inspiring to see how each artist interprets the same landscape in their unique style.
If you’re in the area, I highly recommend checking out the exhibition. It’s not just for seasoned pros—this event is perfect for first-time plein air painters, and with so many participating lavender farms near world-class wineries, it’s truly a painter’s dream.

Can’t wait to see all the beautiful work in bloom!
Painting in Scotland: Capturing the Highlands with a Limited Palette
This October, I joined a group to paint the Scottish Highlands. Scotland’s beauty is raw and mysterious, filled with vibrance, subtlety, melancholy, and magic.
To capture the dramatic landscape and unique atmosphere, I used a limited palette of colors.

Our home base was the picturesque town of Inveraray on Loch Fyne The tour was led by renowned tonalist, and fellow artist, John MacDonald.
Each day was full of painting, rain, sunshine, ancient castles, and great company. We soaked up Scottish culture, from Cullen Skink and haggis to bagpipes, sheep-dotted hills and historic landscapes.
We even enjoyed the sound of bagpipes, the sight of fuzzy sheep, and the company of friends sharing great conversations and laughter.
I used a limited palette from my Lori McNee Signature Set by Royal Talens, with just six colors: Titanium White, Cadmium Lemon, Ultramarine Blue, Permanent Green Deep, Madder Lake, and Transparent Oxide Red.
To my surprise, this limited palette captured Scotland’s moody skies, lush greens, and earthy tones with ease.
Using a limited palette was pleasingly versatile and allowed me to quickly capture the shifting light and textures of Scotland’s landscapes.
Painting in Scotland felt especially meaningful because of my Scottish heritage. Immersed in these landscapes I felt a deep connection to my Celtic roots and my ancestors.
On rainy days, I worked from photos, especially for Kilchurn Castle, but the rest of my paintings were created en plein air to reflect Scotland’s shifting light.
Each finished piece holds a memory of both place and experience—a small study that retells the story of this inspiring journey.
I’m excited to announce that I’ll be leading my own painting retreat in Scotland soon!
And for those interested in the English countryside, I’ll also be hosting a plein air experience in the the Cotswolds in May 2025. Stay tuned for more details—I’d love to have you join me!
I’d be delighted to have you join me on these unforgettable adventures.

When backpacking or traveling abroad, a sturdy, lightweight travel tripod can make all the difference in successful plein air painting.
Below are 6 lightweight travel tripods, ranging from budget-friendly to premium. Each offers a balance of portability, durability, ease, and functionality for your outdoor painting set-up.
Read on to see which one I packed for my recent trip to Scotland...
1. Sunpak 2001UT Tripod (620-Budget-friendly option)
• Build Quality: A budget-friendly aluminum tripod that’s compact but less durable for long-term use.
• Load Capacity: 4.4 lbs (2 kg), suitable for small easels but less ideal for heavier setups.

2. Slik Sprint Pro Tripod

4. OBO N3 Tripod
• Build Quality: A mid-range travel tripod designed for portability and durability. This provides a balance between weight and stability.
• Load Capacity: Handles up to 6.6 lbs (3 kg), stronger than the Slik Sprint Pro but lighter than the MeFoto.

Best for: Artists seeking a well-rounded tripod with a good combination of height and portability at a reasonable price.
Note: The OBO N3 tripod has become harder to find, but it’s been a reliable choice for many plein air artists, and I still love mine. If you’re interested, here’s a current listing on eBay—but availability may vary! For a similar, high-quality option, the STRADA CF305 below is a solid alternative, offering excellent stability and portability.
5. STRADA CF305 Tripod
Build Quality: This carbon fiber tripod is designed to be lightweight, compact, and sturdy, perfect for artists looking for a high-quality setup without the cost of other premium tripods.

Best for: Artists who want a lightweight, durable, and high-capacity tripod, suitable for both studio and outdoor plein air setups.
6. Manfrotto Befree Advanced Carbon Fiber Tripod

Conclusion
For plein air painting, choosing the right tripod depends on your specific needs. The Sunpak 2001UT is a budget-friendly option for lighter setups, while the Slik Sprint Pro offers more height and versatility. The MeFoto Roadtrip is ideal for those needing a higher load capacity and monopod conversion. The OBO N3 and STRADA CF305 both provide a solid balance between price and performance, while the Manfrotto Befree Advanced combines stability and portability. Finally, the Gitzo Traveler Series 0 is a premium choice for demanding setups or challenging weather conditions.
For my trip to Scotland, I packed the Slik Sprint Pro, and it was fantastic for portability and quick setup on those rugged landscapes! If you’re working with larger pochade boxes or painting in strong winds, consider a sturdier option starting with the MeFoto Roadtrip up to the Gitzo Traveler for greater stability.

From Athens to Hydra: A Journey of Art and Culture in Greece
Join me as I recap some favorite highlights from my plein air painting workshop in Greece.
For this remarkable workshop adventure, I teamed up with Walk Europe to create a seamlessly blended artistic exploration with cultural immersion, a holistic journey of art and culture in Greece.
Athens: The Beginning of Inspiration

Our journey began in the cradle of Western civilization, Athens, where we stood in awe of the Parthenon and painted the ancient streets of the Agora.
For me, this was a bucket-list trip and I was awed to be basking in the same Athenian sun that once illuminated the minds of great philosophers and artists.
During our private tour, our enthusiastic group found inspiration in the Parthenon's columns and the grandeur of the historical Acropolis.
Our stay at the Electra Metropolis Hotel was also remarkable. Each evening, we were captivated by the breathtaking rooftop view, where the Parthenon illuminated the night with its timeless beauty.

By the way, from the vantage point of the 10th story, the sunrises were equally spectacular!
Follow along and tour the Acropolis via this Instagram Reel ...
Agora: Where History Meets Canvas
Our brushes led us to the Agora, a place where time seemed to stand still. As we painted amidst the ruins of ancient marketplaces and temples, we felt the weight of history in every brushstroke.

The juxtaposition of modern life and antiquity in this bustling city inspired us to blend the old and the new in our artworks.

Check out the Instagram Reel below to see more about our day in the Agora!
Hydra: A Haven of Tranquility
From Athens, we set sail to the idyllic island of Hydra, known for its art and culture, charm and simplicity.

Hydra offered a serene contrast to the bustling city, with its car-free streets, crescent-shaped harbor, and cobblestone alleys.
For plein air painters, each corner of Hydra was picturesque, waiting to be captured.
Honestly, Hydra is one of Greece's best-kept secrets!
Hydra Port: The Heart of the Island
Hydra's main town, aptly named "Hydra Port," became our home on the island.
It was a vibrant hub of activity, boasting a lively waterfront with restaurants, shops, markets, and galleries.
We started each day with an optional brisk morning hike around scenic Hydra. The breathtaking views kept us inspired during the day.
The welcoming Hydriots shared their stories and traditions, enriching our artistic experience.

Narrow, steep stone streets wound their way through Hydra Port, leading us to quaint villages and hamlets scattered across the island.

Mandraki, Kamini, Vlychos, Palamidas, Episkopi, and Molos unveiled the true essence of Hydra and its people.

In each village, we found inspiration in the simplicity of life and the timelessness of the surroundings.

The Car-Free Oasis
One unique feature of Hydra is its ban on wheeled vehicles, including cars, motorcycles, scooters, motorbikes, bicycles, and e-bikes.
This policy preserves the island's serenity and charm, allowing us to immerse ourselves fully in the tranquil beauty of Hydra.
One of my most cherished excursions was a horseback riding tour of Hydra.
What a unique experience that was!

We embarked on a guided horse trek with Harriet from Harriet's Hydra Horses as our personal tour guide.
The horses carried us up the island's mountains, below the monastery and overlooking the harbor and picturesque beaches.
Our journey back to town took us along narrow cobblestone paths and stone steps, winding through the charming villages of Hydra.
I loved listening to the clop, clop sound of the horses' surefooted hooves as they navigated their way through the stone paths, narrow streets, and ancient stairways.

Hydra is also home to a plethora of cats, gracefully roaming the labyrinthine streets and becoming an integral part of the island's charming atmosphere.
The locals lovingly feed and care for these feline inhabitants, creating a heartwarming bond between the island and its four-legged residents.

Our plein air painting workshop in Greece was a journey of contrasts and artistic
revelations.
At the end of each painting day, we gathered to share our creations and exchange ideas while sampling the local wines.
Together, we celebrated the remarkable progress that each participant achieved during the week with the instructions I provided.
The sense of artistic community and the growth in skills among the group was truly inspiring.
Greece's culinary delights are truly a treat for the senses. Each evening, we eagerly strolled to a different local restaurant, eager to savor the authentic flavors of Greek cuisine.

The delicious food was brimming with freshness that left our taste buds dancing with delight.
Every meal was like a journey through the rich and diverse taste of Greece, from the savory grilled meats and seafood to the vibrant salads and aromatic herbs.
With smiles on our faces and satisfied stomachs, our taste of Greece was a culinary adventure that we'll treasure forever.
From the monumental history of Athens to the serene beauty of Hydra, we painted our way through landscapes that bridged the past and the present.
The island's car-free oasis ensured that we embraced its peaceful atmosphere fully.

As we departed Hydra, our hearts and canvases were filled with the colors and memories of this enchanting island. This truly was a journey of both art and culture in Greece!
Greece had once again proven itself to be an endless well of inspiration for artists and adventurers alike. Until we meet again.

Mastering Composition in Landscape Painting: 10 Key Elements and Techniques
Mastering composition in landscape painting involves more than skillful brushwork and color choice. Good composition in landscape painting enhances the overall visual impact and draws the viewer into the scene.

Here are 10 key elements and techniques for mastering composition in landscape painting:
1. Unequal Distribution of Shapes and Elements:
Avoid symmetry and even distribution of elements across the canvas. Unequal placement of trees, mountains, or other features creates visual interest and a natural flow. Edgar Payne was a master at the unequal distribution of shapes as seen below. Also, note how Payne broke the rule and centered the mountain peak! More on this in a minute...
Renowned landscape painter, Scott Christensen looks for “unequal distribution of shapes and scale” in his compositions. He believes too many shapes of similar sizes are not interesting.
Note the interesting breakup of shapes in Sargent's painting below.

2. Avoiding the Center:
Placing the focal point in the center can make the painting feel static. Instead, position your focal points off-center to add dynamism and engagement.
There are instances when this 'rule' can be broken, but it takes a lot of sophistication to make it work successfully like in the example below.
The lamp post, being centered, indeed creates a division in the scene. However, the deliberate uneven distribution of shapes and values serves to maintain an equilibrium while adding interest. This asymmetry is particularly evident in the pedestrians and umbrellas, their darker values subtly pulling the balance towards the right side of the painting.
Moreover, the gaze of the man and woman, along with the direction in which the pedestrians on the left are walking, ingeniously guides the viewers' eyes toward the left-hand side. This instills a dynamic loop, engaging our eyes in a continuous movement through the painting, enhancing its overall visual appeal.

3. Horizon Placement:
Experiment with the position of the horizon. Placing it below the center can emphasize the sky, creating an expansive, open feel. Conversely, placing it above the center can emphasize the land or water, creating a sense of intimacy and closeness.

4. Leading Lines and Paths: Incorporate natural or implied lines that lead the viewer's eye through the composition. These can be rivers, roads, or even the shape of clouds.
I highly recommend Edgar Payne's book, The Composition of Outdoor Painting where he explains this in detail. The images of the thumbnail sketches are an example from his book.
5. Scale and Proportions:
Maintain realistic proportions between elements. Larger objects usually belong to the foreground, while smaller ones are often in the background. This adds depth and a sense of realism to your painting.
6. Eye Level and Perspective:
Understanding eye level helps you depict the scene from a specific viewpoint. For landscape painting, eye level is at the height of the painter's eyes. Adhering to this perspective gives a natural, realistic look to your composition in landscape painting.
7. Rule of Thirds:
The Rule of Thirds is a good starting point. Divide your canvas into a 3x3 grid and position key elements along these lines or at their intersections. This technique guides the placement of focal points and creates a visually pleasing balance. Keep in mind, that The Rule of Thirds may be a bit predictable, but it can also create a pleasing composition.
8. Consider the Golden Ratio:
Utilize the golden ratio (approximately 1.618) to establish pleasing proportions within your composition. This ratio often guides the positioning of focal elements.
9. Use of Colors and Values:
Be mindful of color and value distribution. Balance the use of light and dark tones to guide the viewer's eye and create depth within the painting.
Get to know the 4 Value Planes to help you when composing the landscape as taught by master painter, John F. Carlson. Use the following image as your guide. There are exceptions to this formula.
10. Experiment and Learn:
Lastly, don't hesitate to experiment with different compositions and techniques. Learn from each piece and continue to refine your understanding of composition in landscape painting.
Mastering composition in landscape painting is an ongoing journey. By incorporating these key elements and techniques into your work, you'll enhance the visual impact of your landscapes and create engaging, captivating paintings.

"There are places on Earth where God has reached down from Heaven and touched in a special way, places where you feel like you're standing in the palm of His hand. When you find it, you know it, your soul knows it." - Michael Traveler, author of MIRACLE ROAD
Why Hydra? Here are some compelling reasons...
- Hydra has always been the artists' muse of the Greek Islands. A magnet for artists with a picturesque harbor, hillside mansions and sparkling seas, Hydra boasts a relaxed artsy vibe.
- Known as the Pearl of the Aegean Sea, Hydra is favored for its marvelous pebbled beaches with crystalline waters and spectacular sunsets.
- In Hydra, dolphins and seals come to play in its waters without fear and visitors experience kindness, generosity and hospitality.
- There are hiking routes across the island where wildflowers bloom and orange trees grow in abundance.
- Cosmopolitan and chic, Hydra has managed to preserve its traditional flair as its original architecture. The picturesque port is dotted with lavish, pastel-hued mansions that date back to the late 18th century.
- Hydra is known for its marvelous pebbled beaches with crystalline waters and the sunsets are spectacular to watch.
- Everything you need is within walking distance. But, should you decide to venture a bit further, the island’s mules, donkeys and horses are the favored mode of transportation. There are over 1000 donkeys on Hydra! Visitors can ride the donkeys from the port and through the cobbled lanes which are home to the revered Aegean type street cats.
Hydra is famous!
- Many Hollywood movies have been filmed in Hydra. When asked, Sophia Loren praised Hydra as “one of the most beautiful places in the world.”
- Hydra mesmerized Jackie Kennedy and has been a favorite playground to the likes of Aristotle Onassis, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton, Sophia Loren, Princess Di, The Beatles, Eric Clapton and The Rolling Stones, to name a few.

DIY Plein Air Painting Easel For Watercolor or Gouache
Plein air painting can be a major production especially if you are a beginner.
Over twenty years ago I began my plein air painting journey. Back then, each trip into the field involved loading up my entire studio setup in the trunk of the vehicle.

I'd drive to a location, park and then haul out my equipment, oil paints, brushes, mineral spirits etc and march out into some pasture. I was so excited to paint, but setting-up was a burdensome task.
Then when it was time to pack up, the entire grueling process would be in reverse order! But now with the addition of a wet palette, dirty brushes plus a wet oil painting that I'd desperately try not to drop as I headed back to my car!
Yes there were some great pochade boxes on the market, but I was a struggling artist and those setups were always just out of the reach of my meager budget. However, I enjoyed painting outside and imagined there had to be a simpler, more inexpensive system.
Back then I was planning a backpacking trip deep into Idaho’s White Cloud Wilderness area. I imagined how fantastic it would be to spend some quiet evenings landscape painting the jagged peaks and high mountain lakes. But my main concern was how I would protect the wet oil panels in my crowded backpack. I was mulling over the complexities, then the thought came to me, “Why not use gouache?”
I hadn’t used gouache since art school. Yet, I recalled all the advantages it would have for painting remotely in the mountains. Gouache would be water-based, lightweight and the panels or sketchbook would be dry and easy to pack away.
With this new plan in mind I looked up some gouache tutorials and came across James Gurney’s Youtube channel. This fantastic artist/illustrator had developed a unique DIY plein air painting easel setup for holding his watercolor/gouache sketchbooks as he painted plein air on location. This was exactly what I was needing! I rummaged through my garage and found various wood scraps and got work.
Inspired by James Gurney's setup, my own DIY plein air painting easel essentially consists of two 10 ”x 6” x .125” birch panels. The panels are joined together with two tension hinges and I added a glued piece of .375 thick plywood on the back with an open metal thread to match my tripod's quick release attachment.
After that I drilled out some small circles and glued into an array of magnets to which I can attach a small metal painting tray (left over from a colored pencil box) and a rubber collapsable cup (I throw a couple of more magnets into the cup before adding water). Finally, I attach my panel or sketchbook with a couple of small clamps I found at the hardware store.
Later, I discovered the James Gurney sells a DVD with detailed instruction on how to build his specific easel. However, after a few years in service I have no complaints about my set up.
Keeping it simple and hassle free has given me more time for painting in the field. Now I don't miss out those fleeting sunsets and other impromptu painting moments. I just grab painting satchel filled with what I need to hit the ground running and painting when I arrive at my destination!
