Proper art studio lighting is one of the most important factors in a successful painting.

Over the years, I have used many types of art studio lighting from North Light (great, but NL is limited to working during daytime hours) to artificial lighting.

I have tried many alternatives that have been both expensive and disappointing.

Lori replaced one track light on her studio ceiling with the ML-Direct lighting system.

A while ago, I installed an overhead shop light, and color corrective bulbs which were supposed to emulate North Light. My finished paintings looked great while on the easel in my studio but to my dismay, some of the paintings looked darker when framed and hung in the gallery.

At times, I even had to repaint areas on my paintings to raise the values! I was very frustrated until last spring when I discovered a fantastic new type of art studio lighting!

I was at the Plein Air Convention and Expo in San Diego when I heard the buzz about Method Lights. Of course I had to see it for myself and it did not disappoint.  The first thing I noticed was the crowd around the booth, and luckily one of the friendly staff was able to speak with me.
Then he demonstrated the easy Method Lights!

The light simply screws into any light fixture such as a recessed can, lamp, or work-light fixture. The lights also have a directional head so they can be aimed in almost any direction. Each ML-Direct comes with a remote control that has many features including a timer and a dimmer.

The MAX setting is the equivalent of a 75-watt bulb, so it is very bright. Remarkably, since the light uses LEDs, it puts off very little heat and almost no UV radiation.

For me, the most important factor is that Method Lights produce near daylight quality light (at 95+CRI) with a patented color temperature feature which is stunning! It’s simple to adjust the light to mimic any type of daylight (from 2700k to 7000k) from dim to bright.

The ML-Direct also has built-in memory so when I get the perfect setting I can get it back any time. I WAS SOLD!

“Method Lights are perfect for illuminating art on my easel, lighting my still life subject, or for displaying my artwork on a wall. These lights are perfect for the artist, art gallery, or the art collector!” ~Lori McNee

Here’s How Method Lights Work:

Consistent Color Temperature

Consistent illumination and color temperature are the most important factors. Being able to create any type of lighting to suit your needs will improve the way you paint.

Many artists will mix and match several bulbs to try and get the right type of light. All of the time, effort, and money spent on that can be solved with one light, the ML-Direct. The ML-Direct has nine different settings so you will know exactly what light you are painting in.

Choose a temperature range anywhere from warm to cool light and dim to bright. All you have to do is press a button and watch the magic happen.

Easy Art Studio Lighting Set Up

It’s so easy! The ML-Direct screws into any existing standard fixture. Simply replace one or more bulbs with an ML-Direct. Many artists will use one light on their work area and one on their model.

This includes Eric Rhoads, Publisher, and Artist, who gave a rare testimonial for the ML-Direct, “I use two Method Lights in my studio. One for my model, one for my easel. I like that I can dim the light or change it from warm to cool, which makes for a great model light. Of course that is a wonderful benefit for painting as well.”

The company, Method Lights, has developed a simple three-step process for getting the perfect light to paint in:

  1. Prop your painting on the easel and turn on the ML-Direct and adjust the angle of the light.
  2. Move the color temperature up and down until it matches the light you’re painting in.
  3. Turn it off at the switch. When turned on it goes back to the last setting.

Once my ML-Direct is programmed for a specific painting, I can just turn it back on and paint away. I never have to worry about painting in the wrong light, which can be a total disaster. By following these simple steps above, you can recreate the golden hour at any time of the day.

I hope you give Method Lights a try. ~Lori
